Did you know that Kenton and surrounds are blessed with a team of Coastal Kindness Medical First Responders who are on call 24/7. They are all volunteers who give their time and expertise freely to you, their community.
Several times a week or even a day, they are called out to assist with falls, severe pains, injuries, broken bones, breathing difficulties, strokes, heart attacks, motor vehicle accidents and many more troubles and traumas.
You will know this for yourself if you have called upon them to assist you, a friend, neighbour or loved one. They attend any incident with care and compassion, discretion and confidentiality.
The responders work as a team with the “lead on-duty” receiving the initial call out on the Emergency Cell Number 066 399 4526 or from Hi-Tec or a doctor. The call out information is then directed to all the Active First Responders and the closest to the incident will assist.
Each active responder is supplied with a grabber bag containing a myriad of supplies, including blood pressure machines, pulse oximeters, thermometers, sugar testing kit, bandages and splints as well as protective masks, gloves and high vis vests. An oxygen machine and an AED machine (Automated External Defibrillator) go along too, just in case.
And as with any equipment, maintenance and compliance checks are essential. AED batteries expire far too quickly and every time a set of AED pads are used, new ones need to be bought and at over R1 000 a pop it all adds up. The oxygen cylinders need filling continuously and this can only be done in PE our nearest supplier. Plus, our most precious resource, our first responders, need to be insured for accidents in the line of duty!
